HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. — Track Bowling has teamed up this year with the W.D. Tournaments for its 22nd Annual Grand Boot Hill tournament, to be held Sept. 5-6, 2009 at Stardust Bowl in Addison, Ill.
The tournament is not for Sunday bowlers, said Woody Demma, who runs the events.
“This tournament is geared for elite bowlers,” he said. “All of our tournaments are conducted on demanding but fair lane conditions. If you are looking to average 220 in tournament play, we suggest you look elsewhere.”
There are no handicaps at Boot Hill, Demma said.
“Bowling should be done on challenging but fair lane conditions. We will not give anyone a score; they have to earn it,” he said.
Demma said that the Boot Hill tournaments are geared to promote the sport of bowling “as it should be.”
“In the 60s and 70s, you a bowler had a 200 average they were a very good bowler,” he said. “Now you have to average 230 before anyone even looks at you.”
Demma said that certain lane conditions and oil patterns affect the reaction of the ball and thus the score.
“Proprietors want to see higher scores,” he said. “It is what brings the money in and as a proprietor I can understand that.”
The tournaments are not open to 2008-2009 season PBA members who were exempt, to those exempt for the 2009-2010 season or those who have won a national title after 1988. Senior titles are excluded from these rules.
The tournament will begin at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 5, with a guaranteed cash of $2,000 for the top finisher; the last cashing game will be $200. Following a buffet lunch — which is provided — competition will reconvene at 4 p.m. that afternoon. The top cashing during this round is $5,000. The final event at 10 a.m., Sunday, Sept. 6 will end with someone coming out $10,000 in the black.
“We get no money from sponsors,” Demma said. “Track is going to help us out with equipment this year, but there is no money coming in beyond the entry fees.”
Each event will be conducted on different oil patters, he said.
