Dayna Galganski and Lisa MacAllister, members of Sam Houston State University’s inaugural women’s bowling team that finished seventh at the 2011 NCAA Division I national championships, have been named to the National Ten Pins Coaches Association (NTCA) All-Academic honor squad.
Galganski, a mass communications major from North Palm Beach, Fla., with a 3.72 overall grade point average, is a third team honoree while MacAllister, a kinesiology major from Kemp, Tex., with a perfect 4.00 grade point average this year, was an honorable mention selection. Both Bearkat bowlers completed their junior seasons this year.
To be nominated for the honor, NCAA bowlers must compile a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.40 during the 2010-11 seasons.
Fifteen of the 123 players named to the 2011 NTCA All-Academic team additionally were honored with first, second or third team designations on the basis of their voting support for the NTCA’s All-America squads. A total of 29 universities that compete in NCAA Division I women’s bowling were represented on the honor squad.
“This is a terrific honor for both Dayna and Lisa,” Sam Houston head coach Brad Hagen said. “The selection honors them both for their athletic and academic accomplishments this year. As seniors next year, we will continue to look to them for leadership.”
Galganski, one of 15 players to earn first, second or third team Academic All-NTCA honors, produced a 196.39 pins average during the 2010-11 season. At the NCAA tournament in Detroit, Galganski bowled a 198.14 average in the round robin competition with the other seven teams in the tournament.
MacAllister produced a 190.42 average for the year.
Sam Houston State won 70 of its 112 matches during its first season of intercollegiate women’s bowling and became the only inaugural program to qualify for the NCAA Division I national championships in the tournament’s eight year history.
